Back to school

In May last year (2006) I spent an amazing month training to be a TEFL teacher at Active Language in Cadiz, Spain. The course is an intense experience even for experienced teachers. A couple of people cracked and left, making it feel extremely like a reality show. However I loved every minute and am now qualified to teach English to foreigners around the world.

En mai l’année dernière j’ai passé un super mois de formation pour devenir professeur d’anglais au sein de Active Language à Cadiz en Espagne. Les cours sont une solide base même pour les plus expérimentés des professeurs. Pas mal de stagiaires ont craqué, cela était digne de la Star’Ac ! Cependant j’ai y apprécié chaque instant et je suis maintenant diplômé pour enseigner l’anglais aux étrangers à travers le monde.

My first job was actually teaching French at Active language and in October 2005 I started teaching English at Active itself (thankyou Simon, Danny, Dan and Jo for all your support)…all in preparation for South America.

Mon premier boulot était d’enseigner le français chez Active Language justement et à partit d’octobre 2005 j’y ai enseigné l’anglais (merci Simon, Danny, Dan et Jo pour votre aide)…tout cela en préparation de mon voyage en amérique du sud.

Teaching in a British Peruvian School

In February I began teaching English in Alexander Fleming College in Trujillo, Peru. I teach English and Geography to Upper Primary (9 – 11 years) and First Year Secondary students (12-13 years). I design a lot of materials as the school has very little despite being modern as far as Peruvian standards go. We are lucky enough to have interactive Smartboards which are great for teaching using the intenet and teachers here have a lot of autonomy (this has its pros and cons of course).

En février j’ai commencé à enseigner l’anglais au collège Alexander FLEMING à Trujillo au Pérou. J’enseigne l’anglais et la géographie aux primaires (9-11 ans) et aux collégiens (12-13 ans). J’ai due préparé pas mal de supports bien que l’école soit mieux fourni que le standard péruvien. Nous sommes assez chanceux car nous avons un tableau numérique intéractif qui est d’une grande utilité pour utiliser internet, de plus les professeurs ont beaucoup d’autonomie (cela a ses avantages et inconvénients bien sur).

Teaching in a school rather than a Language Institute is very different, firstly because you teach only children. The students motivation is often extrinsic rather than intrinsic and as they see you everyday, you have to invent new ways to keep them interested.

Enseigner dans une école plutôt que dans centre linguistique est très différent, premièrement parce que vous n’enseignez qu’aux enfants. La motivation des élèves est souvent plus extrinsèque que intrinsèque, et comme ils vous voit chaque jour vous devez inventer sans cesse de nouveaux procédés pour les garder motivés.

Peruvians are passionate about food, so I’ve found if there’s food involved the kids are full of enthusiam. We’ve done cooking as part of a lesson on responsibility and had a healthy picnic as part of an English unit on Nutrition.

Les péruviens sont passionnés par la nourriture, et j’ai trouvé que si celle-ci était présente dans mes cours alors ils étaient très intéréssés. Nous avons cuisinés en cours pour illustrer le module sur la responsabilité et nous avons organisé un picnic équilibré pour le module nutritrion.
